Of the 20 cancer specialists in Uganda, only one is specialized in treating children (paediatric oncologists) yet the country
records 6,000 cancer cases in children every year. The specialist, who is based at Mulago National Referral
Hospital, cannot cater for all the children.
8 out of 10 children who are diagnosed with cancer die,
despite 80 per cent of the children-related cancers being treatable. laeukemia or blood cancer, burkitt lymphoma which
affects the lymphatic system, kidney cancer and bone tumors are some of the
common cancer types in children.
